johnny gregory and his orchestra
- melodies of japan (1963)
....................

my friend waldo and i used to pick a main road in cape town, and spend the saturday stopping at each second hand shop asking in as casual tone as possible "do you have any old records?" one of the best parts was knowing that nobody else had actually looked at those dusty piles of records in over a decade. the difficult part was deciding who got what, so we devised a system where we'd flip for the first choice, and thereafter pick one-one each. i remember this lp was my first choice - a japanese exotica excursion by young johnny gregory. a great find.
the arrangements are superb, and "melodies of japan" remains one of my favourite exotica albums to date.
