johnny keating's kombo
- percussive moods (1962)

i stumbled upon this guy about 5 hours ago whilst rummaging through the dusty stock of a local building packed full of vinyl, close to the centre of johannesburg. not the new centre, which is flashy and all money-ed over with grand pillars and arches the likes of which any fascist regime would be proud - this building is near the centre of johannesburg, which these days is making a struggling comeback from crack-dens and double-digit monthly murder rates. i must admit i get a thrill every time i ride to my shop, not just because of the 250,000 lps that are waiting, but because all around me i see abandoned buildings and broken windows, a real city that hums with people from all over africa.
ok, so skipping the travelogue to the lp! i'm a big johnny keating fan - i don't own a copy of "space experience" and that REALLY bugs me, but we can't have everything in life. i have a great lp with johnny providing the jazzy backdrop for catarena valente, and "the keating sound" is way cool. this one caught me off guard. it's incredibly wacky and creative and chirpy as all hell. i love it! reminds me of music for tv dinners somehow. you can hear its johnny keating. this one's going to be fun in my car on the way to work...
